History
Irish, Welsh and English workers settled first, followed by Swedes, Germans and, after 1900, Eastern and Southern Europeans; Mexicans arrived after World War I. International Harvester bought Brown’s mill in 1902 and built Wisconsin Steel. The area is named for Charles Deering of the Deering Harvester Company.
In 1953, a Black family’s move into Trumbull Park Homes set off a decade of white violence and protest. Wisconsin Steel closed without notice in March 1980. A Save Our Jobs Committee led by Frank Lumpkin sued, and in 1988 Harvester (then Navistar) agreed to pay $14.8 million.
