Route overview

South of the Loop, the line runs through the Near South Side and Bronzeville to Garfield, where it splits. The East 63rd branch serves King Drive and Cottage Grove in Woodlawn; the Ashland branch serves Halsted and Ashland/63rd in Englewood.

The Lake Street line opened in 1893 and the South Side line in 1892. The Green Line name dates to February 21, 1993, and the whole line closed for renovation from January 9, 1994, to May 12, 1996.
