How the station count works

The per-line totals add up to 191 because transfer stations are counted under every line that stops there. CTA’s systemwide figure is 146 stations. The lists below contain 144 unique station locations. The difference reflects how CTA counts some transfer complexes; Clark/Lake, for example, has elevated and subway sections that opened as separate stations in 1895 and 1951.

Names repeat across lines: there are separate Western, Pulaski, Kedzie, Damen and Addison stations on different lines, and the Blue Line has two Harlem and two Western stations, one on each branch. State/Lake, on the north side of the Loop, is temporarily closed for reconstruction into 2029; CTA directs riders to Clark/Lake or Washington/Wabash instead.
